An Open Apology to Nicole Kidman from American Airlines Flight Attendants

Dear Ms. Kidman

As flight attendants with American Airlines, we would like to personally apologize to you for the behavior displayed by our union president, Laura Glading, this past week. Ms. Glading’s attack on your character as a contract spokesperson for Etihad Airways is unwarranted and unjustified.

Please know Ms. Kidman that this media mishap has little to do with you as a spokesperson and everything to do with the fact that American Airlines, Delta Airlines and United  Airlines (the “Big Three'”) are asking the United States government to amend the “Open Skies” agreement in an effort to limit Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways and Emirates’ (the “Gulf airlines”) access to the U.S. Market. As you may have read, the Big Three allege that the Gulf airlines have an unfair advantage because of government subsidies. This rift is now exacerbated by the Gulf airlines’ allegations that the Big Three (1) use bankruptcy as a means of dumping employee obligations on taxpayers, (2) accept government bailouts to shore up the bottom line, (3) accept state fuel tax exemptions, and (4) accept interest-free loans to further expand. The question the media is asking now is how the Gulf airlines’ subsidies are different than those of the Big Three. It’s like the pot calling the kettle charcoal-gray.

Where this all ties together, Ms. Kidman, is the fact that flight attendants at American recently rejected a post-bankruptcy contract after it was discovered that the agreement was negotiated at a secret dinner meeting hosted by Laura Glading’s cousin, Tom Weir, who just so happened to be a senior executive with U.S. Airways and now American Airlines Group. Yes, rather than negotiating with Tom Horton, the CEO of American Airlines, Ms. Glading was secretly negotiating with Doug Parker, the CEO of U.S. Airways (a non-employer), knowing full-well that the CEOs of both airlines were in the midst of merger talks already. When flight attendants failed to ratify their latest contract by 16 votes, Ms. Glading allowed Mr. Parker to force the agreement on the flight attendants anyway. This has left flight attendants with just two options: suck it up and live with it, or find a lawyer who will challenge it in court. Flight attendants did ask the Department of Justice, the National Mediation Board and the National Labor Relations Board to look into it, but all three were uninterested.

Former AMR Chairman Tom Horton Upon Learning that He was Going to be "Ousted" with $36 million.
Former AMR Chairman Tom Horton Upon Learning that He was Going to be “Ousted” with $36 million.

It’s important to state here that this is the second contract in eleven years that has been forced on the flight attendants at American against their NO vote. For Laura Glading to suggest that Gulf airline employees have no “voice” because they don’t have labor unions is hypocritical when you consider that a NO vote means YES here at American under the union representation of the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA).

In summary, what we have now, Ms. Kidman, is a lame-duck president who is grasping at straws in an effort to rebuild her image so as to prepare herself for a post-APFA career come 2016. What Ms. Glading is doing is using union resources (the union’s PR firm, O’Neill and Associates) to create media rhetoric that will boost her image and hopefully open up some opportunities before she leaves office. Given the shenanigans surrounding Ms. Glading’s failed labor agreement, her options within the labor movement are limited at best. Her attack on you is aimed solely at opening doors in Washington and has little to do with the rights of flight attendants employed by foreign carriers.

We hope you can accept our apology.

This interview with Ms. Celestino is from her 2012 election as President of the Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX), a “network of the world’s leading airlines, suppliers and related companies committed to elevating the level of the airline passenger experience.” Brian Richardson, Vice President for American Airlines sits on the Board.

From the looks of this video, it would be wise for Ms. Glading to do a little homework before she meets with Ms. Celestino. Clearly this executive is no corporate pushover.

    1. Glading does not speak for me. However this has less to do with Ms. Kidman and more to do with the fact that Laura was essentially saying out loud what Doug Parker could not. The irony of her concern for Ethiad Flight Attendants is palpable. She need look no further than her own “Association” to see Flight Attendants being grossly mistreated.

  5. Sorry flight attendants. Unless somehow she was an appointee, you guys elected her and as we all know “elections have consequences”! FYI, the damage is done and keeping the issue alive only serves Ms. Glading better. Your case is made but Ms Kidmans reputation is unfortunately irretrievably damaged. Suggest you support her by attending her next movie!

  6. Laura Glading’s agenda once again is carried out on other people’s expense. She does not represent the majority of the fa’s at APFA, and most certainly not me. She only serves herself and seeking for political gain. If she would care an ounce about flight attendants, it would show in the 7 years she has been a president of the union. Instead of protecting flight attendants, she managed to restrict and hand back the company the major work rules, flexibility, job benefits, and money that people fought 40 years to achieve! I hope no one takes her seriously, and everyone sees her letter as the political stunt that it is.

    1. Vote her out!!! Even self serving President’s of unions have to go.
We have another issue – and that is the mega corporate takeover of our skies by the American
carriers who have not only harmed flight attendants but have harmed travel agencies and the
traveling public. It is unfortunate that the government entities that should be prosecuting under anti trust and for other activities to limit our benefits, amount of money we earn and working conditions have somehow dissipated into the blue.
Nicole Kidman received the backlash of a self serving individual who is no longer effective in any way.
      VOTE GLADING OUT NOW.

  7. I have known Ms Glading for 26 years. She is a venal, self-serving person. I did not vote for her to represent me at work, and she most certainly does not represent me or my opinions of Nicole Kidman. On our behalf she accepted a concessionary contract *that was rejected by us in a vote!*. It slashed our pay by increasing our medical contributions, removing important work safety rules, and destroying our retirement. It also created a 6 figure slush fund for herself and the rest of the Union officers. I am not surprised that she is continuing to find new ways to do horrible things “on our behalf”.

  10. Laura Glading does not speak for me. Apologies. She is a limited uniquely selfish character that is merely looking for publicity at your expense. Laura’s attack on you is so outrageous it could be considered funny if it was not such an offensive personal attack. Her record of union leadership mocks the entire union movement. She is only trying to divert attention from her huge corrupt behavior and feather her bed and profile at your expense. She is leaving office as one of our union’s most concessionary, deceitful, self promoting, and self enriching leaders in our small union’s history. She is simply attempting to increase her profile in order to become a lobbyist or paid spokesperson in our industry. Please understand that the attack was an insult to our own suffering, and one person’s agenda.

  13. Ms. Glading does not speak for me and many others. Her only focus should be the 25,000+ members of American Airlines and APFA. Her tenure has taken us back 40 years and destroyed our benefits and working conditions. Nothing good has come from her tenure. She endorses and promotes a hostile, retaliatory, misogynistic and chauvinistic work environment. Her attack against Ms. Kidman and Etihad is to divert attention away from her failings and misrepresentations. I have never agreed with Ms. Glading’s politics and lack of leadership. Etihad is a 6 star carrier with exceptional staff and impeccable service. Their employees electively choose to work there. That is their choice. The reply from Etihad was exceptionally tolerant and dignified. I am appalled and embarrassed that Ms. Glading did not exercise proper restraint and diplomacy. She owes Etihad and Ms. Kidman a written apology. Wishing you all the best in your future endeavors.

We will leave that to the appropriate authorities to handle what she has done. As a catholic myself, I know it is difficult but we must forgive and move forward. 34. Ms. Kidman, my apologies for the circus show Laura Glading created to be known beyond AA doors. I was shocked when I read Glading’s letter expressing concerns for other airlines female flight attendants’ s voice needed to be heard; when I heard hera say to a female flight attendant here in the U.S. ‘I’m not here to fight for flight attendants who can’t fly’ the Female flight attendant was talking about the job flexibility and certain family situations she had on her own and now with the new contract Glading had accepted to give away the job’s flexibility and impose something we flight attendants didn’t want. I’m glad that female attendant reminded her that she should fight for every flight attendant, that’s why we pay her salary. But of course she doesn’t care about what the membership thinks. Which brings me to be concerned about the letter she wrote to you. Hipocresy and double standards are real and alive. You don’t give a sweat Ms. Kidman and if you decide to take action…Please turn everything around and ask her about all the things American Flight Attendants are against and how she hasn’t fought for us. I’m sure that will be enough to stop her from trying to make a name out of your name. I guess she also wants her 5 minutes fame.
